One misunderstood area of Astrology is the relationship it has to fate and free will. Contrary to what many believe, Astrology is not merely for predicting and accepting a predetermined outcome. If that were the case, then it would be a useless pursuit indeed. Astrology can be used to identify and alter fate, because ultimately it is a tool of awareness.
Our lives are fated so long as we continue living unconsciously. When we let our past experiences, our preconditioning, and our habits dictate our actions and behaviors, then we are limited by our built-up karmas and fate. For those who have a difficult time understanding or believing in the idea of karma, let me put it in the simplest way: Our current thoughts and actions influence our futures. Our destiny is nothing more than the total of all our previous actions. It is a simple principle, however, as we know (or don’t know) our thoughts and actions don’t always align with what we hope to experience in life.
Astrology is not meant to be used superstitiously, nor is it meant to be regarded with a fatalistic mentality. We are products of all we have done and felt this day and backwards. Each person has an equal opportunity to exercise free will if they choose, but it can be difficult to identify which is habit and which is free will. Astrology helps bring awareness to the themes in a person’s life so that he or she can modify his/her behavior in order to help shape their future.
“The message boldly blazoned across the heavens at the moment of birth is not meant to emphasize fate – the result of past good and evil – but to arouse man’s will to escape from his universal thralldom. What he has done, he can undo. None other than himself was the instigator of the causes of whatever effects are now prevalent in his life. He can overcome any limitation, because he created it by his own actions in the first place, and because he has spiritual resources which are not subject to planetary pressure.” ~ Sri Swami Yukteswar
