Meaning of Mercury as Atmakaraka

January 26, 2018 By Brooke 8 Comments

The most excellently formed, of metaphorical speech, and taking pleasure in laughter is Mercury, having Pitta, having Kapha, O’ wise, and of Vata nature.”
-Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra: Nature and Form of the Grahas

Curious, good-humored, and multi-talented, life for the Mercury Atmakaraka person is full of possibilities and different avenues to explore…it’s just a matter of picking which one to stick to.

Mercury is the lord of intellect and perception and their curiosity reaches a variety of subjects. Those with Mercury as Atmakaraka have a playful nature, a great sense of humor, and are never short of hobbies or interests to explore. A person with Mercury as their Atmakaraka will need a partner in life who can share new information with them, can engage in daily enthusiastic discussion, and can share their sense of humor. If you have a family member or partner with Mercury as their Atmakaraka, it might seem like they “go through phases” with their interests.

When it comes to the soul’s desire, there are two primary things Mercury Atmakaraka want to accomplish in this life: communicating their message to the world, and making practical use of their skills. A strong and prominently placed Mercury will give a person lots of skills and due to their enthusiasm and range of talent. These people will need to learn how to overcome distractions that keep them from refining their talents and manifesting their ideas.

Mercury Atmakaraka – The Natural Marketing Pro

Mercury has a natural interest in business and trade, so a person with Mercury as their Atmakarala may want to start their own business using their skills. I was once on a marketing team and all 5 of us had Mercury Atmakaraka! We were a team of writers, designers, and overall content marketers who were also entrepreneurs. Needless to say it was a very entertaining group.

Mercury is unique in that it is the only planet that has all elements within it, hence it’s described by Parashara as being “excellently formed” so those with Mercury Atmarakaka tend to have evenly proportioned bodies. Another interesting aspect of Mercury is that it is one of the “neuter” or “genderless” planets, meaning they can switch easily between their masculine and feminine sides.

Because Mercury is action-oriented and likes to “manage all the details” it makes a person feel like they are responsible for everything that happens to them, and they believe everything happens only through their actions. While it isn’t necessarily bad to take responsibility for your actions, this mindset tends to stress Mercury Atmakaraka out, and it is helpful for these people to acknowledge God’s role and practice some “surrenderance.”

Lastly, Mercury behaves like an “apprentice” to whatever planet it happens to be with, so if your Mercury is conjunct a planet, it will greatly modify Mercury’s attitude, communication style, and specific interests.

When it comes to planets conjunct Rahu, Mercury tends to not suffer as much it seems. Gives a very interesting way of thinking. Thanks for the compliment on the yantra!

So, when Mercury is combust, the agitation Mercury has comes from an over-identification with Mercurial things. Not ever feeling like you’re skilled enough or know enough to finally take action towards the things you want to do. When its the AK influenced by Sun there’s a greater need to individualize yourself against others/be independent/ and lead your life in a way that gives you autonomy. You want to be self-governed.

    Drops of Wisdom

Keen intelligence is two-edged. It may be used constructively or destructively like a knife – either to cut the boil of ignorance or to decapitate one’s self. Intelligence is rightly guided only after the mind has acknowledged the inescapability of spiritual law.
