I’m a little bit old school. Even though I knew I wanted to be an Astrologer in my early 20s, I postponed pursuing it professionally until I was older. I felt I needed to “earn my stripes” and spend many years studying it before charging clients and putting my name out there. I thought, “Who wants to take advice from a 22,23,25-year-old?” “I need more life experience before I can council people.”
So I studied Astrology every day while working as a veterinary assistant, and then got into writing and content marketing where I was making decent money. Bidding my time until the day I would take the plunge and finally do what I was made for. The thing is, learning Astrology is never-ending! So, I never felt quite ready. It wasn’t till I was almost 28 that I said “ok, it’s time to make the business cards, make a site, and put my name out there” and it wasn’t until 29 that I quit ALL other work completely.
I no longer feel my way of doing things was the “right” way. I could have, and should have, started as soon as the passion was burning inside me. I could have built a little website and do whatever my skills allowed at that time, and people could have watched me grow. I put limitations on myself based on age and my perceived level of skill. I never considered that there might have been people who could have benefited from my insights. Yes, sometimes we have to keep our side gigs to fund our dreams, but at some point, you’ll have to commit 100% of your time to your dream if you want to see it go far.
I’ve seen some other Astrologers, extremely talented people do this same thing to themselves. They study until they feel they are “ready.” Meanwhile, far less skilled people are out there making their dream come true. This is why you can’t wait. If you hide what’s inside you, if you don’t put yourself out there, be prepared to watch people who are less experienced, less skilled, and less creative than you making a name for themselves.
My message for you today is don’t do this to yourself. Don’t wait, just start. Start when you’re not good enough, start when you don’t feel ready! Start when there are other people way better than you! I’m not saying pretend to know things you don’t, just be confident in what you do know. Any actions to take now will move you closer to where you want to be. The experience gained now will help your success down the road. Time is ticking on by, and almost no one feels “ready” when they start. There will never be a perfect moment. The secret to starting is…to just start, wherever you’re at.
Happy New Year everyone! Sing the song of your heart, don’t hide yourself and your talents from the world because I assure you – we need it.
